Escape the City: Road Trips from Dobson, NC
Dobson's prime location on I-77 Exit 93 in the North Carolina foothills makes it the perfect launchpad for memorable road trips in every direction. Here are some of the best drives you can do from Surry Inn.
The Blue Ridge Parkway (~20 miles)
America's most celebrated scenic drive is just 20 miles from Dobson. Head south and you'll find yourself winding along the Appalachian ridge with jaw-dropping views at every turn. The parkway is spectacular year-round — spring wildflowers, summer greenery, autumn colour, and winter frost all create dramatically different experiences. Allow a full day if you plan to stop at overlooks and short trails.
Mount Airy — The Real Mayberry (20 miles)
Head north on I-77 Exit 93 and you'll reach Mount Airy — the real-life inspiration for Andy Griffith's Mayberry — in about 20 minutes. Visit the Andy Griffith Museum, walk Main Street's Mayberry-themed shops, stop at Snappy Lunch (featured in the show), and explore the world's largest open-face granite quarry. A wonderful half-day trip.
The Yadkin Valley Wine Trail (30–60 miles loop)
With over 40 wineries and vineyards along the trail, the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail winds beautifully through rolling farmland and forest. Start at Shelton Vineyards (2.3 miles from Surry Inn), then follow the trail through Stony Knoll, Round Peak, and Hidden Vineyard. A full day spent wine-tasting along these back roads is one of North Carolina's finest experiences.
Elkin & the Yadkin River (15 miles)
The charming town of Elkin sits about 15 miles southeast of Dobson along the Yadkin River. Explore the downtown murals and boutique shops, dine at Southern on Main or The Wisdom Table, and get on the water with Rocky Forest River Run for kayaking or tubing. The Elkin and Allegheny Rail Trail is also excellent for a scenic walk or jog.
